Chapter 10

Douglas stood in front of the blank whiteboard and sighed. ‘Did anyone have any luck in finding an electronic one of these?’

Kerri halted beside him. ‘Everyone knows we’re on the lookout for one and I’ve been warned off several times for showing an interested in them?’

‘Oh dear, I’ll have to put in a request for one…we can’t keep spending ages writing it up every morning.’

We could photograph it last thing at night,’ Anton suggested.

‘Good idea and it would be better than nothing…and has anyone seen our acting DI?’

‘She said she was going to be late in this morning,’ Anton replied.

Douglas scratched his chin. ‘She’s not even on duty until Monday, so I suppose it doesn’t really count as late.’

‘What about the daughter, Rachael?’ Kerri said.

‘And remember Dr Woods this coming in this afternoon and we’re going to talk to the pathologist professor this morning,’ Anton added.

‘All right, Ant, you can come along to meet the Prof, but I have to warn you he’s a bit of an acquired taste.’

‘Especially on a Sunday morning,’ Kerri added.

Douglas walked to the table and bent over the pad to make a list.

Kerri joined him. ‘Anton has started the time lines and he’s marking everyone on it and then he’ll break it down into each of the principle characters.’

‘Great, but what do we have on Ernest and Nadine apart from the start of the evening?’

‘We have CCTV sightings of their car heading to Edinburgh on the M77 and M8, and back again later that night. It’s not something that Denney and McGurk could lose.’

‘When was this?’

‘Towards Edinburgh the first sighting was at 17.40 in the afternoon and on the return the first sighting was at 01:44 the following morning.’

‘Nothing from their phone records?’

‘Nope, not the phones that are listed in the reports, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have other mobile phones we don’t know about.’

Douglas stood up and smiled. ‘I wonder if they were of interest to anybody else?’

‘Who are you thinking of?’

‘SCDEA or the Revenue.’

‘Good thinking, I’ll get on to it,’ Kerri said and made for the door, but halted as she saw the handle turn.

The door opened and Nicola stepped into the room. She carefully closed the door. ‘So where have we got to since yesterday?’ she said, looking at Douglas.

‘Not very much further,’ he replied. ‘Anton has started on the timelines and we’re going to see if anybody else has phone records for any pay-as-you-go phones that don’t appear in the file.’

Nicola smiled. ‘Good. Kerri, you carry on with that while Dougie and I have a conversation in my office.’

Douglas followed her downstairs to her office and she sat down behind her desk before taking a glossy sheet of paper out of the file in front of her. She pushed it across the desk towards him. ‘Brigit has identified him as Bernard McQuin, also known as Bernie the Bolt on account of him shooting a man with a crossbow in the early part of his criminal career…and that’s a shotgun he’s holding.
